Project type

Pavilion Proposal

Site Context and Brief

Santa Cruz is a coastal town known for its cliffs, beaches, surf culture, and connection to nature. Rich in history and environmental awareness, it remains a vibrant place for both locals and visitors.

This project proposes a temporary architectural installation beside the Júlio Vieira Staircase, transforming the site into an inclusive public space for community interaction, cultural exchange, and creative activity. The design should respond to the site’s social, cultural, and environmental context while celebrating local identity, sustainability, and new ways of experiencing the landscape.

Concept

Inspired by the waves, and rocks around the beautiful site of Santa Cruz, the concept is to design a structure that is open-ended, inclusive, and adaptable. The pavilion should not have a single function or activity, but instead invite people to occupy it freely, interpreting and using it according to their own needs, rhythms, and desires.

My design intention is to create a pavilion that does not dictate use, but rather offers a welcoming, neutral platform that encourages freedom, creativity, and diverse forms of engagement. Whether someone wants to sit in quiet reflection, meet with friends, perform, rest, read, or simply pass through, the space should accommodate all these actions naturally. I want to emphasise the importance of user freedom and participation in public space, ensuring that the final design is not only functional but also emotionally and socially responsive, a pavilion that belongs to everyone, yet is defined by no specific use.

Proposal

The pavilion has been designed as a light, open, and adaptable structure, without a set function it allows people to define its purpose through their own interaction, whether for gathering, performing, resting, yoga, or simply just pausing to take in the views. Constructed from natural timber and supported by recycled steel legs, the use of both natural and recycled materials creates a sustainable structure that blends into its coastal setting. Simple, flexible and human centred, it is a space shaped by the people who use it.
